His heart began to beat faster when he heard a pained scream from behind the closed door, followed by a loud crash of something hitting the door. He held the door open as he grabbed the monster again and slammed it to the floor.
“Zane, for god’s sake, what are you doing?”
Her son looked up in surprise, his fist clutching a complicated series of straps and fasteners. “Fuck… I’m sorry, Mom, I didn’t know you were home.”
“Hey, watch your language! Why are you leaving your Halloween costume across the room?”
Zane looked at the device lying at his feet, his eyes filled with disappointment. “This is a complete waste of time. Brooklyn can’t go to prom.”
“What? Why not?”
“He hurt his leg during practice,” he said, before slamming the harness on the floor again in frustration.
“Calm down!” She knelt down and tried to pull the seat belt away from him. “Just because she can’t go doesn’t mean you have to skip the Halloween dance.”
“Yeah, right! I’d look stupid wearing a two-headed monster costume with only one head.”
“Why can’t you find someone to go with you?”
“Why bother? The whole point of making this stupid dress was so Brooklyn could go to prom with me.”
“Oh, really? Because, I thought the whole purpose of this was to win a charity award so you could donate it to an animal shelter. At least, that’s what you thought when you begged me to help you get it done on time.” told me.
“It is… I mean, it is… but this dress is Brooklyn’s and it’s mine. I can’t wear it without her.”
Her mother furrowed her brows. “Are you kidding? That didn’t help at all. The only way I could get her measurements was for her mom to email me.”
“I know, but she’s the only one who can wear it. The dance is in less than two hours, how am I going to find anyone else her age?”
“Where is your sister? She’s beautiful, like Brooklyn.”
“Alya? Good luck.”
“Why not? You and your sister always went out together last Halloween.”
“That was when we were kids. It’s different now. She’s changed.”
“No, he didn’t do that.”
“You know…she’s been acting weird now. She never leaves her room. Even asking her is a waste of your time.”
“Well, I’ll talk to him and see if I can convince him to go with you.”
Zane rolled his eyes. “Why bother? I don’t want to go with him at all. I don’t want to go at all anymore.”
Her mother looked at her sternly. “I spent two weeks helping you put on that dress. You wear it, and you’re going to the ball, even if I have to tie myself to it with you. Do you understand?”
He looked at the mess on the floor in front of him and nodded reluctantly in agreement.

When the door opened, Arya was sitting on the bed wearing panties and drying her hair with a towel. She quickly opened the quilt and covered her legs.
“Oh my god,” she said, “couldn’t you have knocked first?”
Her mother gave her an apologetic smile. “Sorry honey, I just wanted to talk to you, but I’m so glad to see you finally wore your new underwear. They look great on you!”
Alia blushed with embarrassment and pulled the blanket up, covering her lacy bra that matched her little pink panties.
“I don’t know why you bought these for me. I told you I wanted something to wear at home, not to go to the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show.”
“Then why don’t you and I go to the mall tomorrow like we always did. You can pick out some different underwear, and we can buy you some new clothes.”
Alia shook her head no and bent down to grab the hair dryer.
“Wait a minute, dear, please… before you open it, I want to ask you something.”
“What?” Arya said, circling the switch with her thumb.
His mother took a deep breath. “Can you go to the Halloween dance with your brother tonight?”
She pressed the switch and the hair dryer turned on. She bent down and let her wet hair hang straight in front of her like a curtain to dry.
“Aria. Aria!” her mother yelled, trying to drown out the noise.
He rolled his eyes and looked up, flipping the switch, thumb still pressed firmly on it. “What?”
“It’s really important that your brother needs to go with you.”
“What am I going to do, The Hunchback of Notre Dame?! You know I can’t dance anymore.”
“Alya, please, don’t start…not tonight. Go downstairs and see the dress your brother made. He put a lot of effort into it, but now Brooklyn can’t go with him.”
“So I have to go on his date? Why can’t he just go alone like he always does?”
“It’s not like that. It’s a two-person costume. No one will recognize you when you’re in it.”
“What do you mean, fake horse or something? I don’t want his ass in front of me all night.”
“My love, just go down and see.”
Alia flipped the switch with her finger and shook her head to express her decision. “I won’t go.”
“honey please-“
The hairdryer whirred to life, drowning out her mother’s voice, and Alia leaned forward, running her fingers through her wet black hair, drying it. But then the fan motor suddenly stopped spinning and the hairdryer went silent. She stared at her mother, who was standing beside the bed, plug in hand.
“Look, I don’t know why you don’t let me talk to you anymore, but this time you’ll listen to me. First prize tonight is a five thousand dollar donation to the charity of the winner’s choice. Your brother’s gotta wear that dress because he really wants to win it for the animal shelter and he can’t do it without your help.”
“I can’t force you to go to prom with him, but if you think it’s more important than sitting in your room feeling sorry for yourself, then your brother is right… you’ve changed.”
She bent down and plugged the cord back in. The hairdryer came alive in her hand, startling Alya. She watched as her mother left the room without saying a word, closing the door and leaving, her wet hair sticking to her face.

They had heard her arrival before they saw her, the tapping of her cane and the tapping of her feet announcing her arrival. As she limped down the stairs, holding the railing, Alia saw her mother waiting below. Then she saw her brother.
“Oh, man…it’s alive,” he said.
Alya ignored his comment and offered a standard greeting instead. “Hey loser.”
“Hey, Spaz,” he replied, smiling.
As soon as she reached the bottom of the stairs, where her mother was waiting for her in case she needed help, he made way for her.
Arya half smiled, “So, where is this ugly dress I keep hearing about?”
“Right here,” Zane said, bending down to pick up a bunch of straps and fasteners.
“What the hell is that?”
“This is a two-headed monster costume that I designed myself.”
“Yeah, I can tell. It looks bad.”
“Aria!” her mother said.
“Sorry…how to do this exactly?”
“It’s really not that complicated,” said Zane. “I made it out of some broken tumbling and positioning harnesses from the gym. Let me show you.”
He came up behind her and placed the gear on her shoulders, letting the web of straps fall to the floor.
Arya looked at the crazy equipment covering her body and said, “Wouldn’t it be easier to cut off my head and sew it onto my shoulder?”
“Well, this is certainly quiet,” he replied, encircling her and tightening the straps around her thighs, waist, and torso.
He pulled out her wand and she scrambled to the edge of the table for support.
“It’s okay! You have me.” He put his arm around her waist, gently pulling her close and effortlessly lifting her off her feet.
Alya’s eyes widened in surprise. “What the hell are you doing?!”
“Make sure you’re as tall as me. We’d have a funny looking two headed monster with one head sticking out of my armpit.”
She swallowed nervously. “If I’m too heavy, you can put me down.”
“Are you kidding me? I’ve been messing around with girls your age all day at training. Mom, can you help us with this?”
She immediately followed him, buckled her belt and tightened the straps. As she did so, Alia looked in the mirror.
“Oh my god, I look like a giant baby!”
“You are a giant girl ,” her brother replied.
But she did not respond; she was mesmerized by her reflection in the mirror. Her brother was more than a foot taller than her, weighed at least a hundred kilograms, had broad shoulders and a powerful chest. Combined with the fact that his thick arms were holding her thin body in front of him, he looked childish.
“It’s like an adult-sized child’s harness,” she said, looking at the straps on her body.
“That’s right,” Zane said, then let her go.
Alya gasped, expecting to fall, but realized she was hanging from her brother’s body, dangling helplessly in front of him, her feet dangling a foot above the ground.
Their mother walked to the front to inspect the costume. “How does it feel? Is it too heavy?”
“Not at all,” Zane said, adjusting the straps on his shoulders. “The harness distributed his weight perfectly.”
“Well, that’s not fair to me at all,” Arya said, rocking back and forth, trying to get comfortable. “It’s not fair.”
“That’s because you’re wearing these stupid sweatpants. When we go to prom, you have to wear something different.”
Alya shook her head. “No, this is what I’m wearing.”
Her mother reached forward and pulled the heavy fabric off. “They’re too loose. Why not wear a pair of gym shorts?”
“I can’t…I’m done with it.”
“What? When?”
“A while ago, I didn’t need them anymore, so I donated them.”
“Well, we can find you another pair.”
“No! I’m not wearing shorts. I’m wearing this.”
Her mother shook her head. “Nonsense, let me call—”
“I’m wearing sweatpants!” Alya yelled, struggling to free herself from the harness binding her captive. “If that’s a problem, find someone else to wear this stupid thing!”
“Calm down, Spaz,” Zane said, holding her close as she struggled. “You can wear whatever you want.”
When she finally calmed down, her mother helped her finish dressing her. A large shirt stretched over her form-fitting frame, oversized pants that hid the fact that her legs were practically tied together, and of course, makeup.
When they stood in front of the mirror again, Alia was surprised by the end result. The costume actually made them look like a two-headed version of Frankenstein’s monster, with her head leaning to one side inside the costume, sticking out from her brother’s side. They appeared to be large, muscular creatures. She thought that if her head hadn’t stuck out, you wouldn’t even be able to tell that her body was strapped right next to her brother’s body. With mom’s skillful green makeup, they both transformed into one – a two-headed monster.
Zane’s hand came out of the left sleeve of the dress, while his other hand was inside the dress and wrapped around his sister’s waist to support her. Alia’s right hand extended to the other sleeve and she pulled it back to her body, trying to put her fingers in her brother’s nose.
“Hey, stop it!” she said, smiling as she tried to turn her face away from him.
“Mom, look, that two-headed monster is biting his nose.”
“Pick your own nose,” he said, pinching her side, teasing her through the dress and she cried out, squirming helplessly under his strong fingers.
“That’s enough,” their mother said, smiling. Zane finally relented, and Alya fell forward, breathless with laughter. “It’s time to take you both to prom.”

As the minivan stopped in front of the hall, their mother glanced at the backseat, where both of them were in costume, with Alia sitting in costume on her brother’s lap.
“My two little monsters,” he said proudly. “After the game, do you want me to come back at ten, or do you want me to come back later?”
“Oh no!” Arya said before her brother could answer. “The train is leaving, leave ten minutes early. We will leave from here as soon as the game is over.”
“Okay. Have fun and stay close to your brother.”
“Haha,” said Alya. “Very interesting.”
When they finally got out of the van, the two of them said goodbye and her mother walked away, their arms awkwardly out of sync.
The dress was paired with thick, heavy boots, and Zane was still trying to get used to supporting his sister’s extra hundred pounds as he walked slowly toward the hall entrance, even walking like a demon.
He came in, signed up to compete, and walked into the crowd of party-goers. Many of them were Zen College kids, and those who recognized him nodded at him.
As they walked through the crowd the first thing they noticed was how hot it was; the heat of the people dancing in costumes definitely turned the temperature up a notch. But the second thing they noticed was the abundance of sexy costumes, scantily clad witches, cowgirls, and kittens. Those were just a few who actually dressed up as demons.
Zane looked around uneasily and muttered, “This is a bad idea.”
“How do you think I feel?” Alya whispered. “Every girl here looks like a porn star and I’m half of Frankenstein’s retarded two-headed brother!”
“No, I’m serious…this is horrible.”
Aria couldn’t help but see everyone whispering and pointing at them, and she couldn’t help but want to bury her head in the dress as soon as they walked in. But she’s not sure what changed her brother’s mind. “What’s wrong? What’s wrong? Am I too heavy?”
Zane sighed. “No, it’s just…I told everyone I was coming here with Brooklyn. Now they’ll know I brought my sister to the prom.”
“Yeah, trust me; I’m not too happy about it either.”
“I’m really surprised you agreed to come.”
“Dr. Frankenstein’s assistant didn’t give me much choice.”
“Yeah, Mom didn’t give me much of a choice.”
“Great, since we all agree that no one wants to be here, let’s go get a drink. It’s hot in here.”
Zane looked at him in surprise. “Drinks? You mean alcohol?”
“No, I want you to put my head in the fountain… and I mean alcohol of course! There’s a bar there.”
She glanced over and saw a bartender dressed as a vampire pouring drinks. “Are you crazy? The sign says you should be twenty-one. You’re seventeen!”
“I’m eighteen, idiot. My birthday was last week.”
“Oh, yes. Why didn’t you have a party?”
“Because I don’t want to have a stupid party, but I definitely need a drink. Take me there, the guy won’t recognize anyone.”
As they approached the bar, Zane whispered, “This is a really bad idea.”
“Don’t screw this up,” she whispered.
The bartender looked at the two men. “Can I get you anything tonight?”
Zane swallowed nervously, his eyes darting back and forth to the bottle behind him. “Um…Harvey Warbanger?”
The bartender narrowed his eyes and scanned the two of them, and Aarya flashed the friendliest smile possible.
“I want to see his ID.”
Alya’s smile disappeared. “Look at this dress, does it look like it has a place to put my ID in it?”
Zane’s jaw dropped and his eyes widened in embarrassment, but she continued her rant before he could stop her.
“Half the people here are minors and you decided to find out our identities? We’re thirty-seven years old, idiot!”
Zane put his hand over his sister’s mouth, apologized, and scurried away while she screamed obscenities into his palm and tried to squirm in her harness, sticking her finger out at the bartender.
When they were far enough away, Zen removed his hand and said, “What happened to you? Why did you do that?”
“What happened to me?! Who ordered the Harvey Wallbanger? Why didn’t we tell him we wanted two beers?”
“I don’t know… I guess I thought it would make me look older.”
“Yes, almost seventy years old!”
“What about you? Why did you tell her we were thirty-seven?”
“Because that’s our combined age, idiot!”
“Oh…okay, whatever. Maybe I can find something if you keep quiet.”
“If you want peace and quiet, you should wear a prosthetic head. Take us around the room,” he said, twirling and looking around. “Maybe when someone is dancing I can steal their drink.”
“I can’t walk when you’re squirming all the time,” he said. “You’ll throw me off balance.”
“I can’t help it; this stupid harness doesn’t fit. It’s too tight and it’s too hot.”
“That’s because you insist on wearing those stupid sweatpants and sweatshirts. If you dressed like a normal girl-“
“Oh my god, Xana?” a voice came from behind him. “Is that you, bro? That dress looks great!”
They turned around and saw a man dressed like Hugh Hefner and a blonde girlfriend dressed like a Playboy bunny. Aria couldn’t help but notice how the revealing outfit pushed her large breasts up, making them look even bigger, and she was sure her brother wasn’t doing the same. As they both smiled at her, she suddenly had the urge to hide her head in the gopher-like outfit.
“Oh, hey Matt,” Zane said, “that interception yesterday was great. It saved the game for us.”
“Thanks, friend.” He nodded to the blonde next to him. “This is Stacy…she’s a fan of mine.”
She winked at him. “Hey, are you on the football team too?”
Before Xana could say anything, Matt answered for her. “No, Xana isn’t on the team. She’s just a cheerleader.”
“Oh,” she said, disappointment in her voice. “I thought only girls could be cheerleaders?”
Zane wanted to answer, but Matt stopped him again. “So, who is it?”
Zane swallowed nervously. “Oh, this is…um…this is my sister Alya.”
“No, you came here with your sister, right?”
“Well, Brooklyn was supposed to come with me, but she had a bad accident and hurt her leg. So I-“
“Wait a minute,” Matt said, “what’s so surprising about that? I just saw Brooklyn and she seemed fine.”
“Brooklyn is here?”
“Yeah, I just saw her a few minutes ago. Anyway, good luck with the costume contest. Later.”
As they left, Stacey whispered something in Matt’s ear and looked back with a smile on her face. Arya’s face would have been red with embarrassment if it hadn’t been painted green. “Why did you tell him I’m your sister?”
Zane ignored him, craning his neck from side to side, watching the crowd gather around him.
“Where are we going now?” said Alia.
But he ignored her and walked back to the bar, passing through a group of college students playing Monster Clash. Alia noticed an unattended drink on a nearby table and reached for it when her brother moved to the left and moved the drink out of her reach. She was about to tell him to turn back when he suddenly stopped.
